[Davey and Adam] We think this is lame at best and heretical at worst. When Manwich corp. equated their mediocre sloppy joe sauce with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they committed a sacrelige not normally seen nor expected in food condiment commercials. I can only hope that other Christians and classical music afficionados are equally outraged. I'm using straight ketchup from now on.

[sunny] I have to agree. I am a music lover and I think this is a sacrelige also. I do not believe that religious music should be used to advertise anything, unless it is to advertise more religious music.
I really think that Manwich should pull this commercial and use more secular music, rather than to use the music that we praise God with to advertise their product. I will not bow down to a sloppy joe. But I will bow down to my God and Savior

[Me] Are you serious? It's a fucking commercial. Get over your holier-than-thou selves. Christ.

[anonymous] It's a shame that you haven't learned to talk in a civilized manner.
But back to the subject. How would you feel if you had written or composed something for a particular purpose and then without your consent it was used for something pretty trivial? This has nothing to do with being -than-thou. And why is it that when Christians make their voices heard, they get such a violent reaction? They're only expressing an opinion, a right they have according to the Constitution, just like all other American citizens.

[Reason] Possibly the reason is because they are asking for outrage over the use of song in acommercial that has been in the public domain for a very long time and as such has already been used in countless tv shows, movies and commercials. It would be quite difficult to get consent from Beethoven, but the piece is long past any copyright protection anyhow. Perhaps Christians sometimes get such a violent reaction because of the asininity of their outrage over such things as Harry Potter, Teletubbies, Ode to joy, and even evolution. If mild annoyance were voiced more often than outrage (or something like the Spanish Inquisition of 1478-1834) at the slightest things they didn't agree with, maybe they wouldn't so often meet with such fierce opposition.

[Music Lover] The music was not composed by Beethoven as a religious hymn. It's the finale movement of the Symphony No. 9. Therein lies the real sacrilege.

[Susan] This ad is disrespectful and offensive to Christians! The Manwich lyrics are a paraphrase of the 1907 Henry Van Dyke hymn, "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" The ad appears to be an intentional mocking of oour LORD.
""Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!
* * *
All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.
* * *
Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.
* * *
Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.""

[just me] Lots of commercials have (sadly) used Beethoven's ode "To Joy" in advertising. The problem here is not their use of the MUSIC (by Beethoven), but by their use of a religious text (by Van Dyke, much later). I've written to them and they're responded insisting that they were doing nothing more than adapting Beethoven. When I pointed out that Van Dyke's text was not Beethoven's, they did not reply.

[Mac] I know. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. Does nobody actually check this stuff before their marketers release it? What were they thinking? More corporate foolishness. No one with a brain previews it I guess. Sort of the tail wagging the dog. Well, until ConAgra finds a brain, it's Del Monte for me.

[Ali] Oh my goodness. It's a commercial that most people will forget right after they view it. There are more important and pressing matters in this world than a song in a Manwich commercial.

[Christine] I saw this ad for the umpteenth time today and thought, you know, I'm not even religious and I still think this ad is a travesty.
As Mac and just me noted, this is not the just the use of the Beethoven, but a use of lyrics that are overtly religious. Was it purposeful? I would have to think that they were.
Making suppositions on my part, I would imagine that advertising executives might have taken this on two levels. One: people who eat Manwich wouldn't know classical music from rap (subpoint one) if they do, they'll associate it with church and it'll be all good. Or, two: they will associate it will church and that will be good and so they will like it. In either case, it was woeful ill-thought.
As for Ali, it was a discussion you had to search for, had the time to respond to, so how forgettable is it? The fact that it is made by ConAgra should be enough to put most off of this "food" but this ad, in trying to generate talk about their product (no such thing as bad publicity) may instead have brought a strong contingent of Americans to speak against their products. I would be happy to call you fellow Americans if you are willing to stand up against this company for any reason.
Finally, Reason, stick to the argument at hand. Assumptions about what any person stands for are just a general ad hominem argument that shows you are unwilling to answer the argument at hand.

[Colin] As a classical music afficiando and a Christian, I think this is brilliant. I don't find it offensive in the slightest. The original piece was composed by beethoven, and I don't think he would mind the new use of the song because A)he's dead, and B) he couldn't hear it anyway. Clever advertising, no harm, no foul.

[Reelmom] I am SO happy to see that I'm not alone in my reaction to this commercial; it's been haunting me for months. I thought I was the only one in the country concerned about where the broadcast of this ad says our society is headed. I wish that 'just me' had posted a link to get through to ConAgra but when I get through to them, I'll pass the info along. Thanks, good people - so glad to know you're still around.

[Johnny and Kathy] Our church choirs have started a boycott of all Hunt's products until they pull this hideous bastardization of a beloved hymn. I, for one, will NEVER buy any of their products again. They have already demonstrated blatant disregard for culture, religion, and great music. They have also demonstrated that they are too cheap to write their own music. Despicable!

[Reelmom] T'was easier than I thought. Here's the 800 line to Manwich: 800-730-8700. They take calls M-F between the hours of 10am to 7pm cst. Here is the link to contact them by email: http://conagrafoods.com/utilities/corp_feedback.jsp
Following is my message to them:
"I wish I had words to communicate how offended I am by your Manwich commercial that hijacks and distorts the devotional words penned by Van Dyke to the Hymn Ode to Joy. I can't imagine how those responsible for this travesty can look themselves in the mirror! I, my friends and our Church congregants will no longer purchase Hunts products until the company pulls the ad and, hopefully, acknowledges their wrongdoing. And ConAgra: Shame on you for not blocking this abominable mockery of what was intended to express worship of an Entity vastly superior to a sloppy joe!

[manwich is god] i think this is the best commercial to ever be shown on the face of the earth. if you have not read my name, manwich is god and i worship it. i would do anything to help a fellow manwicher to become as close with manwich as i am. i eat manwich everyday, but i also feel guilty because after i eat it i cannot worship that manwich ever again. how disappointing. also, if anyone knows how to cure a case of the manwich runs please contact me ASAP.

[lee] I just recently saw this commercial. I'm surprised that it's been on since 11/07. I thought that it must have been a new one. But it must be recycled since they are apparently so devoid of creativity at Manwich that the best that they can do is steal from hymns. I have never put one of their products in my mouth and you can bet your bootie that I never will NOW.
