Music in the commercial
The Verve never wanted their music to be used in commercials, but since they did not own the publishing rights* for Bitter Sweet Symphony they couldn't stop the song from being used. In the end they licensed their recording of the song to be used in the advertisement in hopes it would make it less likely that another advertiser would use a copy-cat version of the song.
* What caused The Verve to lose their publishing rights of Bittersweet Symphony? The symphonic backdrop is sampled from an Andrew Oldham Orchestra rendition of a Rolling Stones song ("The Last Time"). It's not the Oldham recording that was the problem, though. It's the publishing rights of the original Rolling Stones' song, which is owned by ABKCO Records.
Lyrics used in the commercial
