amazon - Live in Paris Buy album from amazon

Editor's note: Based on user feedback below, the version in the commercial is from Nina Simone's "The Great Show - Live in Paris 1968" album, which is linked in the second amazon listing above. As of May 2007, that album isn't in stock at amazon, so the iTunes link and first amazon link still point to another version that is available.

Lyrics used in the commercial

All you got to offer
Is your mean old white backlash
But the world is big
Big and bright and round
And it's full of folks like me
Who are black, yellow, beige and brown
Mr. backlash, I'm gonna leave you
With the blues

Description

the song is right but the version commercially available is different. doesn't have the same bass groove featured in the commercial.
maiwyck May 04, 2007 11:26
I think it is the version from Forever Young, Gifted and Black. It's a live cut and on iTunes they have the remixed version of that live song.
saul May 04, 2007 16:16
that's it! mystery solved! thanks!

maiwyck,
The "Backlash Blues (2005 Remix)" at iTunes from Forever Young, Gifted and Black doesn't match the commercial either. For now I'm leaving the above iTunes and amazon links pointing to the version from The Very Best of Nina Simone.
gina May 06, 2007 23:11
any progress finding the commercial version?
kevin May 07, 2007 11:47
Nina played this song in a concert just days after MLK's death. RCA Victor released the concert on the album "Nuff Said." It was digitally remastered in '04 and is available at Amazon as an import. I haven't listened to the song on this album. But this heavy, mournful rendition could be from that show. I'd like to know.
automated slim May 07, 2007 22:26
The pounding piano is similar to the version on the album Nuff Said, I found on last fm -http://www.last.fm/music/Nina+Simone/%27Nuff+Said%21
the vocal pacing on the lexus commercial version is clearly very different then the Forever You... album on iTunes in the 2005 remix while both versions are similar we still have not found the Lexus Commercial version of Backlash Blues

where o where can i get this song?!?
rudebwai May 13, 2007 00:43
the commercial version is from 'The great show- live in paris, 1968'- arguably one of the best live shows she ever did....(you can buy the album on amazon- it's just listed as 'live in paris', I don't think it's on iTunes)

Happy listening

Actually, you can go to napster, and i believe the song "Backlash Blues" available on the Album "The Very Best of Nina Simone 1967-1972 - Sugar in my bowl" seems to be VERY close.
dcADscout May 13, 2007 22:13
The song in the Elvis Costello commercial is Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 Op. 125 In D Minor: II. Molto Vivace. You can find many different versions of it on iTunes.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

dcADscout, thanks. We now have a entry for the Elvis Costello ad. http://www.splendad.com/ads/show/973-Lexus-Elvis-Costello-Beethoven

raulzzz, "The Very Best of Nina Simone 1967-1972 - Sugar in my bowl" is the album that we already have linked for both iTunes and amazon. It's a little different than what's used in the commercial.

rudebwai, thanks for the info about "Live in Paris". I have no way of confirming that is the song in the commercial, because Amazon doesn't have a sample, but I've added that album above.
rudebwai May 14, 2007 09:26
trust me, it's the same version...
rudebwai May 14, 2007 10:20
I put the song on myspace so you can confirm:

http://www.myspace.com/backlashbluesparis
kevin May 15, 2007 00:31
I think that rudebwai found it. The base groove and piano sound the same and her vocal pace and inflections seem to mirror the one on the ad.
Daniel May 15, 2007 07:15
Haha, yo guys are all wrong, though rudebwai comes closest. It is a live performance, remastered, with a slightly faster tempo and is available on the 2006 album Empress Live.
Cheers!
splendAd Admin Keith May 15, 2007 07:54
Daniel, I listened to the sample from Empress Live at amazon, and that's not it.

I'd suggest people listen to the The Live in Paris version that rudebwai included in the myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/backlashbluesparis
roscoe May 15, 2007 17:38
Absolutely not the one from Empress Live as evidenced by the lack of bongos in the Lexus commercial version. The Live in Paris version and the commercial both have some snare drum trills that match up with each other, not to mention the same groove and vocal inflections.

We have a winner with Live in Paris!
RICHARD May 15, 2007 18:02
ABSOLUTELY LIVE IN PARIS 1968 IS THE VERSION I JUST RE LISTENED TO IT
Chet May 20, 2007 02:38
Oh my, thank you rudebwai, that was beautiful.
kevin Igunbor May 21, 2007 16:48
thanks you guys are realy helpful, it is the live in paris version. this comercial blows my mind the song, john legend, the camera composition, its all perfect
Steve-O June 05, 2007 13:37
Where can I download the commercial on to my computer?
Not an Idiot June 14, 2007 13:16
Kevin Igunbor, of course everything is perfect. I don't want to discount the great song or John Legend, but Lexus spends hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising and marketing. Everything HAS to be perfect. We are all victims of marketing because the dialog and music in the background give us chills, and we want to listen to the song and watch the commercial over and over again. When you get a good feeling, and see a product associated with it, you are much more likely to consider buying that product, even if that good feeling has NOTHING at all to do with the product. Marketing magic, everything is pre-planned.
fredonb June 22, 2007 15:00
Has anybody had any luck finding a version that can be downloaded anywhere??
Henry Igunbor February 25, 2008 20:21
Hey Kevin I found you on this blog. Your bro Henry
