Rolling Rock - Beer Ape Apology

Category: commercial

Summary: Fictitious V.P. of Marketing at Rolling Rock Ron Stablehorn apologizes for their Beer Ape ad.

Video:

Description

Sitting at a desk with a glum look on his face, Ron Stablehorn speaks to the camera and apologizes for "a recent tv ad where an ape parachutes into a pool party, and dances in a suggestive manner with a sexy lady." He claims they did marketing research that found apes are more fun than a dog, otter, or rat at parties.

This commercial is part of a viral campaign meant to relaunch Rolling Rock after being acquired by Anheuser-Busch in 2006. The "Beer Ape" ad supposedly aired and received viewer complaints, but the "outrage" was just part of the campaign.

On a serious note, there was genuine outrage in Western Pennsylvania towards A-B and Rolling Rock during the acquisition, because the Latrobe brewery was closed down as part of the deal.
