I did not care for this commercial at all. I find it tasteless and unappealing.
This is a horrible misrepresentation of the breed! It just feeds stereotypes that many of us work very hard to erase. Shame on any add exec who approved this. Shame on Verizon.
Awful! First of all, the dogs are chained, then, they're ears are cropped. Next, they're displayed as vicious dogs...what an awful stereotype! Spend one day volunteering in your local animal shelter and you will fall in love with at least one pit bull. Humans make them mean...just as humans can make a chihuahua or cocker spaniel mean. I will never switch to verizon!

Horrible ad degnerating a wonderful breed. I generally enjoy the Verizon commercials particularly the recent "Dead Zone" TV spots and find it hard to believe that this ad would appeal to anyone except perhaps to those who fight pit bulls.
I had to look this up because I couldn't believe that commercial! Those poor dogs!! (I know, in real life they're probably fine) but the representation was just awful. Too many animals live and die horribly due to humans. This commercial just seems totally selfish. I was surprised that it was Verizon because I like their other commercials.
I've written to Verizon complaining about this ad.
This is a TERRIBLE commercial portraying an awful and UNTRUE stereotype of 'pitbull' breed dogs. When raised properly, these dogs make wonderful family companions. This breed is already being persecuted unfairly due to negative media attention and ignorance about the breed. The last thing they need is a commercial like this to seal it in people's minds that all pitbulls are vicious attack dogs that should be put to sleep simply because of their breed. I wrote a complaint to LG about this ad and hopefully enough others will complain to get this ad off the air. I recently bought an LG phone and now I'm too disgusted to use it...I'm going back to my old Sony cell phone.

This is a sad commentary on how some dogs are treated and it should be against the law to chain any dog to a car and be left in the hot sun - and in some states it is! Please stop depicting such cruelty and especially stop adding to the misinformation about Pit Bulls!

Omg its just a commercial about some dogs. Stop crying and it is true that pits are some of the most vicious dogs whether trained or not look at the statistics you cry baby's. You act like these dogs are paying your bills. As as long as the dogs were not hurt in the commercial why cry.
CryBaby... go work with American Staffordshires (aka Pitts) and see what well behaved, loving creatures they are before you open your mouth. I am a vet tech and volunteer in my spare time with rescues. They are far from aggressive and "vicious". Now those chihuahuas and Dauschaunds have bitten more people than any pit bulls.
It's really amazing that Verizon would put out a commerical like this! People @ Verizon need to be fired for allowing this to air! What incredibly stupid execs!!

I seen it last night and can not stand the fact they are making the pitbulls mean. They have a bad enough rap this didn't help them any better. We are a rescue and we see enough. This did not help them at all. Someone needs to be educated

Maybe you should look at the real stats. instead of getting all your info. from the "yellow rags" passed off as journalism. I agree the people that believe such stereotypes should work with the rescues & selters for a few days. It's true about passing judement before walking a mile in my shoes. You need to meet the real victims.

If PBs were bred to be Human-Aggressive they could not be handled and used for the purposes they were originally bred-for...to attack bears and other dogs. They have to human-pleasing, or they would never do the bidding of their handlers in the ring. Accordingly, PBs are predisposed to be very affectionate towards humans. They are not human aggressive unless there has been abuse, neglect or an absence of human socialization early in life.

I beg to differ with Trent about chaining. There is a huge difference between tying a dog up (using a chain or a cushy nylon cord makes no difference) and walking him on a leash. In fact, chaining is considered so cruel that many communities have passed laws against it. Regarding the commercial, I think it is tasteless and generally dreadful - not only depicting dogs on chains but falsely stereotyping the breed. I will be cancelling my Verizon service and switching to another provider.

The ones living at the end of chains, "outside dogs," invariably come into rescue with every parasite known to dog, and it's a miracle if they don't have heartworm, which is fatal. Living on a chain for protracted periods of time, outside, is a hard and often cruel life for a dog. They are more vulnerable to disease, dehydration, and attacks from other animals or humans, since they are free only to run the length of the chain.

Also, my wife and I have had AmStaffs live with us, and we have even rescued a stray pit bull that got lost when it got out of it's yard 1/2 mile away. We kept her for 2 days and played with her a bunch. She was a pure joy to have for the two days that it took us to find her owner. I do love Pit Bulls, but I sure as hell know what they are capable of too.

He'd have scars in horrible places, he'd be emotionally damaged- afraid. And, then, when you realized he DID live- you realize what caused him to be that way. You realize that he came from a dog fighting pit. And for 10 years- while hes ALIVE you worry that BSL will hit you next. And he's not registered. What would you do? He's TEN.
Have you ever held a dying pit bull puppy in your arms and tried to nurse him back to health because his momma; a dog your rescued from a touch situation; won't feed him? And, when you finally do lose him- you realize maybe it was for the better because assholes would want him to be theirs anyway and who wants to put a puppy into a world like that anyway?

I think we ought to cool the emerging flame war... but I want to say that I have a 3 year old male (neutered) pit mix who loves everybody. He was a chained yard dog in a poor part of my city that I adopted when his owners decided they didn't want him anymore. While on the chain, he barked constantly. Now, after about six months with me, he doesn't bark at all. I didn't get him to be a guard dog, and frankly, I'm glad he's a quiet boy, but the only harm he would do to an intruder into my yard would be to lick them to death.

YUCK! I have been a LONG time verizon customer and seeing this really upsets me. I am so tempted to switch users. And - I just re-watched the ad, and I don't think the guy looked Hispanic at all. To me he looked like a pretty typical young American of northern European descent.

I can tell you first hand - as the owner of a pit bull myself, that it is clearly just another slam to the breed. My dog is nothing but a sweetheart and ironically, I was bitten in the face last week by a Pekingese!!! the pit bull: Humans are at fault. Dogs that bite and kill usually have an owner. Sometimes it is they themselves that get killed. Ultimately it is their responsibility to control their dog and keep it in a safe environment. If owners would do that... we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

I feel that this commercial is VERY VERY wrong, and should not be displayed at all. First off, its wrong to chain a dog to a car and leave it in the sun all day. Second of all, the commercial leaves more of a message about pit bulls than the phone!! My family myself has a pit bull, and she is THE sweetest thing on earth. It is not the way they act naturally, but the way you train them. Pit bulls are VERY VERY misunderstood, and if trained right, can be the best dog in the whole world. This commercial is wrong and should be put off the TV stations it is currently on.

Trent..your stats come from the CDC fatal book. The "breed" listed is PIT BULL TYPE, not PIT BULL which would be the American Pit Bull Terrier. Pit Bull TYPE means that is resembles a pit bull, not that is IS one.
And for anyone that thinks you can train a pit bull to be human aggressive, you are wrong. Human aggression displayed by the pit bull is a GENETIC fault and those dogs should be humanely euthanized. Whatever ad agency chose this breed for this commercial should be chastized, brutally! This commercial is a disgrace to every rescue, shelter, and human being that is trying to save this breed from ignorant jerks that most likely find this commercial appealing.

Trent: fair enough. Just so you know, I don't own a pit bull either. I own a Chihuahua. And you are right. This breed is not for everyone. AND, in most cases, when a pit bull attacks a human, it's because of bad genetics. And you can thank the BYB's for that.

The websites that you have been getting your information from, get their information from the CDC and they should be referencing that. It's appalling that in today's social climate, LG and Verizon would create an add so stereotypical and ignorant on TV. So why picture it chained in a junkyard? Why not at least pick a true guard dog?
These people are upset because this breed of dog (who can't defend itself from people's stereotypes) is being once again maligned - that is the point, if you want to dig your own head out. And these stereotypes are causing serious detriment to the breed.
Verizon is just irresponsibly continuing these stereotypes, and in turn doing more harm to a breed that already has plenty of unearned bad press. These folks are calling them on it, and asking for the ad to be removed. I'll add my name to that list.

I think the commercial is stupid. I DO have a pit bull. The breed should not be regulated anymore than any other dog who has picked up a bad repustation because of the idiots out there. Who the heck can compare a pit to a gun?? My pit WOULD NEVER bite a person (even to protect me) ignorants should not comment about the breed unless they actually KNOW a TRUE pit bull's behaviour. I used to be assinine about the breed until I met one, and realized how stupid people are that perpetuate the madness and nonsense saying they are attack dogs. BTW Daschund's are actually the #1 dog biters. People report dogs with any sort of boxy head as a pit, but are, more often than not, wrong about the breed. So no dog should ever be portrayed as a junkyard dog. So basically you're for censorship rather than any type of light that may cast dogs in a bad light. be reflected in film, regardless of the genre. My only experience with a pit was my brother's dog, and he was a very gentle dog with other people, but that didn't negate the power that he had. I'm sure not all Pits are as nice, just like any breed there is variation among individuals. But unlike the oft mentioned daschund a pit bull can kill easily. Give it up people Pit Bulls are know for being the extremely powerful and potentially dangerous, and they will always do so. This commercial had no intent to demonize pit bulls, they just were showing mean looking dogs... nothing you will ever do.. EVER will keep people from being scared from Pit Bull looking dogs, and as long as they are they will be used as such in the media.
Puckhead, how often do labs kill. That's the issue. If most bites are serious it's not as big of a deal. A bite of unknown severity and death are completely different ballparks
I am very upset by this ad. For one it has APBT as vicious and chained. Just the whole ad is upsetting using dogs that way. Don't really care if what breed. I am sure they could have come up with another way to be daring. Bunge jump over a bridge or something.

While I find this forum to have become nothing more than a place to name call and use bad language, please don't call me names or use bad language if you respond to my post. I found the add to be in poor taste, mostly because of the use of pit-bulls, but also because of my inability to even really understand what it was for. I hate when commercials don't just come out and try to tell you what it is they are selling. I am the owner of a pit-mix, and I do know that she has the propensity towards dog aggression, which is why I introduce her to other dogs very slowly, and am constantly watching her body language because I would never want a situation to be out of my control. I love my pitty mix, but if she ever, ever, ever, showed even a glimmer of human aggression, even to someone coming in to rob my house, I would have her humanely euthanized. They were originally bred to be dog aggressive, but never to be human aggressive. That is a genetic flaw, and one that should never be tolerated. While I fully understand why people have become afraid of pit type dogs, those of us who are proponents of the breed just hate to see that fear perpetuated by ad agencies who haven't done their research. Look I posted without one bit of profanity, or calling any one a name. Yay me.

Yesterday, when I was explaining what happens in the commercial to another person it occurred to me that the man was DARE-ing to jump the fence. The phone is a DARE! So, let's look at Verizon's potential for sales in showing this spot: (1) A number of people are offended by this commercial and (2) don't get the point it is attempting to make.
It also took me explaining the commercial to my husband to realize that the guy was being DAREing. Stupid advert.

I notice some posters seem to suggest that a smaller breed's bite is somehow different from a larger breed's bite as far as damage to the peron. My daughter who has a pit mix was feeding her dog and her landlord's dog Chloe (picture Disney's shaggy dog only smaller) when Chloe attacked. My daughter, fearing Chloe might be injured, interrupted the fight and was bit by Chloe. Even though the puncture wound was small she went to the ER. Long story short, Chloe's bite gave her a blood infection and five days and thousands of dollars later she was out of the hospital with a catheter for IV antibiotics. You may have guessed that the landlord was a jerk and evicted her shortly thereafter.
Rats - this stupid commercial just interrupted "Seinfeld" on TBS. I had hoped it would stop airing by now.

Dear Trent, the technology comment stung but I do admit to some clever ads going over my head. Thank you for your sympathy concerning my daughter's dog bite. I hadn't thought about the accident until this post. Having a blood infection is serious. The doctor couldn't figure out what antibiotics to use, hence the 5-day hospital stay. Her hand kept swelling and I neglected to mention the cellulitis. This happened during midterms and she was extremely upset. A lot of her pain resulted from the PICC line (catheter) insertion into the tip of her heart. I am so grateful that she didn't die. And she wasn't disfigured or crushed. My comment about damage to the person was meant to mean death. I have seen horrific photos of victims of animal bites in the past and I don't mean to diminish that aspect of large dog bites. When I get up enough courage, I'll look at your links.
Sara: the two links I posted are not of dead victims of dog attacks. They are of people that were attacked, but survived. Although they are graphic.
Did your daughter finish her mid-terms? Dog bites can be nasty and infectious! I can't remember how many times I was told while I was growing up "a dogs mouth is so clean... ". Maybe those people never noticed their dog licking it's own ass. :-)
Human bites can be very very infectious too. I have a friend that almost lost his hand from gash in his hand from a human mouth. (happened during a fist fight)

I concede this point, but I do not believe that pit bulls are inherently fighters because that is what they are bred to be. I choose to judge each dog, individually, rather than as a whole breed. Yes, I've come across nasty pits, even been attacked at the shelter where I work, but I've also been attacked by a shih tzu. I've also read that little dogs attack as "frequently" as pitbulls, the attacks just aren't reported because they are a.) not as severe and b.)some people are embarrassed by having been attacked by a little dog.

It just so happens that BAD RAP has rehabilitated quite a few of Michael Vick's former fighting dogs and a bunch of them are currently living in homes with other dogs/pitties.

As responsible owners we should always be looking out for the signs of aggression and by aware of our dogs body language so it can be curbed before it starts. Any dog interactions should be well supervised even with dogs that live in the same household.

It is appalling and extremely disappointing that a company such as verizon would choose to depict innocent Dogs in such a horrific manner, it is disgusting!! Are you aware of just how many Dogs die each day at the hands of such ignorant people who will view your commercial as justification for continuing to CHAIN their Dogs and or put them in a dirty junkyard to “guard” their “possessions”???? The fact they are chained up in the place they are supposed to be guarding also is about as ridiculous as anything I have seen!

Speaking as someone who has owned pit bull terriers & worked in pit bull rescue for 10 years I find this commercial repulsive. Those of us that know & love the breed are sick to death of these ridiculous stereotypes. Shame on you Verizon. Innocent dogs die everyday because these myths are perpetuated by people & companies like you. Just disgusting.
